Are Boom Cards Still Relevant?

I first started using Boom Cards in 2020 as we were launched into virtual learning as a result of the pandemic. I soon became obsessed! They were a great way to keep students hands-on and engaged in learning even in a virtual setting.

Flash forward to today, 5 years later, and the question is… are Boom Cards still relevant? Absolutely! I continue to see counselors use Boom Cards in various ways to enhance their school counseling program. Yes, even in person!

Use in a Class Lesson

Tier one classroom counseling lessons are a great place to start incorporating Boom Cards into your curriculum.

In-person classroom counseling lessons

You can use Boom Cards as a stand-alone lesson like in this Meet the Counselor game, or you can use them to supplement a class lesson you are already using. I recommend pairing these Bullying Prevention Boom Cards with a standard print lesson . You can use them at the beginning to assess the class’s baseline understanding or at the end to serve as a review.

Here are some other ideas for using Boom Cards in person in the classroom!

Virtual classroom counseling lessons

In a virtual setting, you can post the Boom Cards to a Google Classroom or screenshare them while teaching the class, just like you would if teaching a digital lesson in person!

Check out this post to see how I used Boom Cards during virtual class lessons.

Use in a Small Group

Tier two small groups are another great way to use Boom Cards as an engagement tool.

In-person small group counseling

You can divide the group into two teams and give them a tablet to play the Boom Cards on. The team to finish first wins! This is a fun way to review or introduce a concept you are going to cover.

Boom Cards serve as a great discussion activity. Try using Coping Strategies Boom Cards as a group to discuss how students would respond in different scenarios.

If meeting virtually, try sending home the Boom Cards using a FastPlay link as a “homework” assignment to review.

(Click here for more details on how to set up a Boom Learning account and assign FastPlay links.) This way you can inform caregivers or concepts you’re covering in session. You can also send them as a pre-task for students to do before coming to group that you can then review together.

Use in an Individual Session

Tier three individual sessions are probably the easiest way to use Boom Cards in counseling! The customization of a one-on-one session gives you a lot of flexibility on how you can integrate Boom Cards into the curriculum.

In-person individual counseling

Depending on the student’s area of need you can select Boom Cards with the corresponding topic to work on together. You can cover topics like social skills, anxiety, and empathy . Sit side by side and have the student verbalize aloud why their selecting each answer. This is a great way to initiate meaningful conversations.

Virtual individual counseling

For individual students, you can do the same thing by having them share their screen with you so you can watch them play the Boom Cards and provide feedback. Or you can send them the activity in advance and review together on the call.

Boom Cards are a great way to enhance your existing counseling lessons as they are highly engaging and so simple to use. The kiddos love them and they require zero prep. A dream I know!
