This 6-week newcomer experience small group is designed to help students adjust to life in a new country. This curriculum includes everything you need to run a successful school counseling small group including self-assessments to make data tracking easy. The included weekly outlines are aligned with CASEL Standards and ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors.
First generation and newcomer students will celebrate their culture, define their strengths, and set goals for the future. They will identify people in their support system, learn strategies for dealing with potential trauma and discuss how to handle lifestyle changes and missing loved ones.
This group includes interactive worksheet journals where students can self-reflect in a fill-in-the blank format!

BENEFITING STUDENTS:
Each week students will learn support system and coping skills to to deal with being a newcomer and first generation student.Ā In addition, they will build rapport with students from similar backgrounds while reflecting on their past and setting goals for their future.
At a minimum, being in the counseling group allows students to identify and share their feelings, develop important social skills through participation, and practice empathy while hearing othersā experiences.
Ā SAVING TIME:
With easy-to-implement outlines and activities, this group curriculum is very low-prep. Simply print out each session before students arrive and keep them in a file folder.
The included self-assessments are a great way to get students to self-reflect on their progress and you can then share this information with teachers, and parents, or in your program report.
