Personal Space, Boundaries Game, & Appropriate Behavior - School Counseling Game
Grades K-3
This digital resource is available to download immediately after purchase.
This personal space game teaches elementary students how much space to give others, using a memorable visual: a cactus. Students hold their arms out like a cactus and spin around to Practice the Cactus, which shows them the right amount of space to keep between themselves and others.
The resource includes two posters, a matching game and a board game in printable and digital versions. Both games are played at a table, which makes them a good fit for small group counseling, and the resource is designed for students in grades K-4.
Students will learn how to:
⭐ Explain what personal space is and why it matters to others
⭐ Use an arm's length as a guide for how close to stand
⭐ Ask before giving a hug, and offer a high five or handshake to someone new
⭐ Keep their hands to themselves, even when they feel frustrated
⭐ Distinguish choices that respect boundaries from choices that do not
This resource includes:
✔ 2 personal space posters
✔ Matching game rules, 8 pairs of cards (16 cards) and cactus card backs
✔ Board game rules and a full-page game board
✔ 8 Cactus Cards with real-life scenarios, in color and black and white
✔ Digital board game with counselor instructions for copying, editing and sharing the game with students
How it works:
Introduce the cactus
Students read the posters together, then stand with their arms out and spin to see how much space to keep around them.
Matching game
Students turn over two cards at a time to find pairs with tips such as "Ask others before giving them a hug." The player with the most pairs wins.
Practice the Cactus board game
Players roll a die and move along the path. A cactus space means striking the cactus pose and moving ahead two spaces. A Cactus Card space means drawing a scenario card, such as tickling a neighbor during class (move back three).
Why you'll love this game:
⭐ The cactus pose becomes a quick, silent reminder for lines and hallways
⭐ Two games that build from learning the rules to applying them
⭐ Movement helps the concept stick
⭐ The editable digital version can be adjusted for any group
Young students navigate personal space throughout the day, at their desks, at recess and in line. A clear visual and a structured game make this boundaries game an effective way to practice.
